Once they were gone from sight, Billy asked Scorbion, “Was there ever a connection with Thornton’s legs being of unequal length and what occurred?”

Scorbion thought for a moment and replied, “No. Occasionally in investigations there are alleyways explored which end up going nowhere, and that was one of them.”

Billy responded, “I’m sorry to have to leave, but I must get to the News and write this story so it makes tomorrow’s paper.”

Scorbion smiled. “Remind Waters, no photographs of me.”

As Billy left, he called out, “He knows.”

Maude Parker, Beatrice Sneed, and Eliza Reed surrounded Scorbion. Maude spoke first. “I do ’ppreciate what you did. At least now I know Ronald ain’t comin’ home.”

Eliza took Maude in her arms and held her as she quietly wept.

Beatrice added, “It’s a weight off me for sure. I’m grateful to you.”

Scorbion motioned for Jayson to join them.

Scorbion told him, “I leave these ladies’ confinement in your hands, Chief Inspector. I do not believe that they will cause you any problems, and I am confident they will never again be in a similar situation.”

Jayson winked at Scorbion. “You were marvelous. It was as masterful a solution to a case as I’ve ever witnessed. Truly astoundin’. And as you say, I know I’ll have no problem from these lassies, and I might get to enjoy my last few years in the service without those four bounders around. I thank you as well.”

Scorbion smiled and patted Jayson on the arm. “Will you see to it that the ladies get home safely, and then make arrangements for Miss Reed to appear at your station tomorrow?”

“Right-o,” Jayson replied, as he gathered up Quirk and the women and herded them from the shop.

Calvin opened the storeroom door. “Lads, will you bring all the chairs over here and stow them away? After that’s done, we can open for business today—at least what’s left of this afternoon.”

Thomas, Yves, and Barnabus hauled the chairs into the back room, while Calvin opened the front door, changed the sign to Open, and lifted the blinds and shades off the windows. “That’s better,” he exclaimed when bright sunlight streamed in and lit the shop.

“It most definitely is,” Thelma agreed. Then she asked Scorbion, “Are you going to the station now?”

Scorbion thought for a moment before replying. “No, actually, when I leave here my destination will be the Gazette to inform Hardcastle I have resolved the case.”

“Might I come with you?” Thelma asked.

Without hesitation, Scorbion responded, “Absolutely. I would enjoy having you there, not only for your company, but also so there is a witness to the look on Hardcastle’s face when I advise him of what I have done.”

Thelma donned her hat and Scorbion put on his glasses, and they went outside and walked toward the center of Haxford.
